Back in January, Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa in Oregon, came under fire for refusing service to a lesbian couple because of their religious beliefs. When the controversy hit the media, Sweet Cakes got an initial boost in sales. However, the boost was short lived and the fallout cost them far more than had they just simply made the cake. Claiming a “major loss” in business, Sweet Cakes closed it doors.
Aaron and Melissa told the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) that the LGBT rights advocates used “militant, mafia-style tactics” to shut down the business.
Hmmm, kinda like the ”militant, mafia-style tactics” that the religious right has used against gays for decades?
“I didn’t want to be a be a part of her marriage — which I think is wrong,” Aaron told the news channel of his decision to turn away the lesbian couple earlier this year. Meanwhile, wife Melissa echoed those sentiments: “I am who I am … I choose to serve God.”
The lesbian couple that the Kleins refused to serve had filed a complaint with the state, alleging that Sweet Cakes by Melissa discriminated against them based on their sexual orientation, according to Oregon Live.
However Melissa Klein argued that it was “definitely not discrimination at all.”
“We don’t have anything against lesbians or homosexuals,” she said in August. “It has to do with our morals and beliefs. It’s so frustrating because we went through all of this in January, when it all came out.”
I don’t know where the couple learned their version of discrimination but here is the actual definition:
1. unfair treatment of a person, racial group, minority, etc; action based on prejudice.
When you say that you believe gay marriage is wrong, you are discriminating and clearly homophobic. Period. In the same respect, claiming “Morals” as a justification to treat people like unworthy second class citizens who are less than yourself, is not exactly very “christian” of them. Quite lofty actually.
Another tip, no one who is gay friendly uses the term Homosexuals. It is archaic. The term homosexuals now sits in the same discount bin as the term “coloreds”.
With all that being said, here is the bottom line. The law in Oregon states that NO business can refuse service to an individuals based on sexual orientation. In all of it’s simplicity, the couple broke the law.
