File this under dumbass and ignorant.
Louisiana State University running back Alfred Blue and head coach Les Miles made extremely offensive, ignorant and just plain stupid remarks about gay athletes playing in their sport.
“Football is supposed to be this violent sport — this aggressive sport that grown men are supposed to play,” Blue said, according to the HRC. “Ain’t no little boys out here between them lines. So if you gay, we look at you as a sissy. You know? Like, how you going to say you can do what we do and you want a man?”
Miles made a more diplomatic statement, saying he would have to “describe how I saw locker rooms and how I saw travel and how I saw staying in hotel rooms and how I saw those things. If that’s not an issue, I think things [with gay players] could be resolved.”
What is this, 1985? Grow the fu(k up. It is safe to say that gays have long outgrown the old stereotype that we are all limp wristed girly boys (not that there is anything wrong with that mind you, just making a point) Would he refer to Mark Bingham, the openly gay man who fought the terrorists on flight 93 to save lives while giving his own? Or Oliver Sipple a gay man, who took down Sara Jane Moore while she fired a gun at President Gerald Ford during an assassination attempt in 1975? Or closer to home for Blue; Dave Kopay and Esera Tuaolo, both gay former football players? I could go on.
As for Miles. the only reason locker rooms, hotels, and travel would be issues was if you made them issues. This obviously will come as a surprise to Miles, but not all gay men want to fu(k every man they see. Just like every straight man does not want to nail every woman that crosses his path…Miles and Blue possess views that result from uneducated ( and I am not talking academics) , ignorant backgrounds. i.e. living under a rock. It’s quite sad for them more than anyone else quite frankly.
Blue has apparently since apologized for his remarks. But we live in a world where apologies come too fast after the fact for them to be meaningful. But necessary all the same.
HRC’s head honcho Chad Griffin had this to say:
“The remarks from LSU head coach Les Miles and one of his players are deeply troubling and send the wrong message to youth across the country,”"Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with one’s ability to play a sport. These men should be telling our youth that if they put their mind to something and work hard, they can achieve it. If Les Miles doesn’t think he can be that kind of leader, he should step aside and make way for someone who is.”
