Homophobia Breeds: Austin school district cancels play about two male penguins and a baby…

Austin school officials have stopped the run of the play “and then came Tango” about two male penguins that hatch an egg and raise a baby.

“And Then Came Tango” was written by Emily Freeman, a graduate theater student at the University of Texas. It’s based on the story of Roy and Silo, two real penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo who were given the egg to hatch, and Tango, their hatchling.

The Austin American-Statesman reports UT students performed the play for second-graders at Austin’s Lee Elementary School. District officials then raised concerns about age appropriateness and canceled further performances.

It was the first time the Austin Independent School District had canceled a UT performance.

Freeman said the play is “about different families.”

Now if the play was about a male and female raising a hatchling, would it be deemed as inappropriate? I high doubt so…
