Bloomington, Indiana full of gays...

Bloomington is “home to the nation’s fifth largest per capita population of same-sex couples and one of the most progressive cities in the Midwest, both socially and politically.”

izz: I just caught an article on 365gay about the top gay small cities in America and Bloomington came in at number 5. When i saw this it kicked up wonderful old memories for me. I have a great fondness for Bloomington. My best friend Alana went to IU and i would go out and visit her. I will never forget the first time i flew there. At that time you could still fly into Bloomington airport, so when my flight from NY got into Chicago around 8:30 that fall morning, i went to the gate to check in for my connecting flight. Imagine my face when i saw the 20-25 seater/puddlejumper/snoopy plane with wing supports and propellers that was to be my plane. Needles to say i parked my ass at the bar and downed as much booze as i could in the 45mins before the flight took off. We had a stop to make in Champagne, Il, first which the landing strip, I'm not kidding, was surrounded by corn fields, then it was on to Bloomington. We landed, i walked into the room, yes room (the entire airport was the size of basically some old time dmv) to get my luggage and there was a hole in the upper part of the wall where the luggage came through....it was certainly and eye opener for me.....

Once in Bloomington though, it was a whole different story. I immediately fell in love with it. I am a small town "girl" by heart so there was that element, but Bloomington still possessed  that certain quality of calm, neighborly life, long passed on the coastal towns. It had the essence of a throw back to the 50's and 60's. That first night there we roamed Kirkwood,  gorged on Mother Bear's Pizza and then hit The Video. Yes we were under age and had fake id's, it was much easier back then...

As every good little gay boy does, i found my way to Bullwinkles via my friend. I am sure there are those of you whom have fonder memories of Bulls then i do because it was "your" bar, i was a visitor after all. But i thoroughly enjoyed Bulls. I really did. They people, the atmosphere, the music, just fun, fun, fun. I met this guy there on one of my trips, who lived outside of town on a farm. I remember him and i climbing into his white pickup after the bar closed, getting white castle burgers and driving all around Bloomington showing me the local sites then parking near the quarry i believe (if memory serves) and just hanging out bull shitting for hours. He was your typical midwest corn fed hottie, i have often thought about him over the years...

I was sad to read that Bullwinkles closed in 2006. It was a fun place and I am glad i was one of the lucky ones to experience it. Bulls will forever be burned into the my memories of my gay youth. Anyway i have go on long enough. So I am not surprised that Bloomington ranks in the top 10 best gay small towns. It truly is a gem...
