Missouri gay teen fights for right to bring boyfriend to prom- WINS!

stacy-dawsonStacy Dawson (right) a 17-year-old senior at Scott County Central High School in Sikeston, MO, who tried to bring his boyfriend to the prom was denied his request because student handbook said,  “students will be permitted to invite one guest, girls invite boys and boys invite girls.”

Yes because a student handbook is on the same level as, oh lets say- the U.S. constitution? Wtf?

After he questioned the policy, the school board would still would not consider his request and put bigotry first.

Seriously how are these people even allowed to teach/administer children?

Dawson being a tenacious teen of today said hell to the no and did what any high school kid would and SHOULD do when facing discrimination, He called up the Southern Poverty Law Center and they pounced.

On Thursday, they  sent the school and the district a letter reminding them that Dawson had some basic human rights.

SPLC cited two relevant court cases: the 1969 Supreme Court decision Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District , which determined students don’t “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gates,” and a  Mississippi court case involving Constance McMillen, who sued her school when it wouldn’t let her take her girlfriend to prom.

The school being caught with their hand in the bigotry cookie jar, and having enough brains to sense that a shitz storm was about to rain down, announced it was deleting the ban on same-sex dates from the handbook and website but maintains that the hate rule was not about discrimination to begin with. Year right.

“This was during a time 10-15 years ago that the previous administration was having issues with some of the students trying to come in on either the single rate or the couple rate,” explained district superintendent Alvin McFerren. “They implemented that to make sure they couldn’t circumvent the rates that students were supposed to pay as they entered into our dances—it was never intended to be a discriminatory thing,”

Yes because i am sure that str8 guys were lining up at the door with their bro’s trying to get in as a gay couple in order to get a cheaper rate? Like wise for the ladies….I always say, if you are going to make an attempt to lie, at least put some effort into it. Not all of us watch the Kardashians…

congrats to Stacy for spitting in the face of discrimination!

I didn’t go to my prom in 1976 because while I was out in high school there was still no real way to fight anything back then. After, all, I was a high school felon!

    Good for the kid!
